Tutoring

In the summer of 2025, Activate’s reading specialist, Carissa Harrison, will offer six weeks of one-on-one literacy tutoring at Activate.

We’re giving Activate students and graduates first access to these slots. Then, we’ll offer slots to Activate siblings, and if there are still slots after that, we’ll offer them to the general public.

We currently use the supply closet as a one-on-one room. Tutoring will be in that room, but we will replace the door with a windowed door and move the supplies out to make it more welcoming and comfortable.

Methodology

Carissa's literacy tutoring is guided by the data she collects for each student. She systematically moves students from simple to complex concepts, integrating and adapting her training in Orton-Gillingham with her study of the Structured Word Inquiry method and the ongoing research into teaching and learning strategies. Each session, she uses fiction and nonfiction passages for reading and writing practice and literacy games that provide repeated practice of targeted patterns and concepts.

Dates

There are sessions in the following weeks, Monday through Thursday.

  • July 14

  • July 21

  • July 28

We require tutees to be available for most of the six weeks.

Times

Tutees sign up for either Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays. Tutees are expected to do at least two sessions per week.

The slots are 1:00-1:50, 2:00-2:50, 3:00-3:50, and 4:00-4:50.

Activate Camp + Tutoring

If your child is enrolled in Activate summer camps, they could do the 4:00-4:50 tutoring slot.

They could also do the Monday and Wednesday 3:00-3:50 slot, but they would need to get picked up by a parent at Sellwood Pool at 2:45 and brought to Activate. (Sellwood Pool is closed on Monday and Wednesday during the first week of camp. I’m unsure where we’ll be on Monday and Wednesday of that week, but I am considering OMSI and NCAP.)

Rate

The rate is $80 per 50-minute session.
