School-Related FAQ
Why do you start with 3rd grade and not kindergarten or 1st?
We have found a niche. Most of our students’ families try their neighborhood schools in lower grades, but midway through, they realize that their child isn’t thriving. Some of our students needed higher-quality literacy support, some needed a quieter and more relaxed environment, some needed to be challenged more, some needed a lower student-to-teacher ratio, some needed more art, some needed more hands-on projects, and some needed more autonomy.
Do you have plans to expand to include kindergarten-2nd grades or 6th-8th grade?
We often consider adding lower grades, middle school grades, or both, but we don’t have immediate plans to do so. If we did add grades, we’d need to add a second location or move into a larger site, and we still have several years on the current lease.
Do you only accept kids with dyslexia?
We serve neurotypical and neurodivergent students. Most of our neurodivergent students are dyslexic.
What is the school calendar?
We start the day after Labor Day and end in early June. For vacations and holidays, we follow the Portland Public Schools calendar. We have one no-school planning/grading day, while PPS has six. Here is a link to our calendar.
