Activate is a 3rd- through 5th-grade microschool specializing in art, hands-on learning, and dyslexia support. We offer students high-quality instruction in academics and art, daily self-directed time, and extended outdoor recesses. We serve neurotypical and neurodivergent students.
We also host popular full-day art-based summer camps for incoming 3rd- through 6th-graders in the community.
We are asking for some financial support to repair window vandalism. From the late summer of 2022 to the late winter of 2023, our windows were shot out 8 or 9 times with a pellet gun, so we installed security gates (aka the Actigates). We push the gates up every morning and pull them down every evening, even on days off, because our plants need sun, and our bright, art-filled windows enhance the neighborhood.
On the night after Christmas, we forgot to pull the gates down, leaving our windows exposed overnight for the first time in two years, and we had a window shot out, along with at least four other nearby businesses. Only the exterior pane of our double-paned window was damaged, so it’s not too noticeable because the shattered glass was removed. The most noticeable thing is that half of our logo is missing.
Our insurance should cover the window and logo replacement with a deductible of $1000. However, this will likely increase our premiums, and our insurance costs are already enormous. Thus, using insurance might not be the best option.
We’re trying to raise $4000, which should cover the cost of the window and logo. However, Activate is not a 501c3, so donations are not deductible.
If there’s leftover money, we’ll use it to build a much-needed sensory area in our school. All children have sensory needs, but because most Activators are neurodivergent, their sensory needs are more significant. We have some sensory tools in place but want to expand on them. We want to install a climbing wall, a foam pit, and a swing. This will serve our students and hundreds of summer camp kids in the community.
